In February, I had the pleasure of giving birth to my son and I wouldn’t have wanted to go through that experience without a doula. Christina stepped in to be our replacement doula (as our original doula was at another birth). Christina was extremely supportive in helping us implement our birth plan and most importantly helped us with decisions when things didn’t go as planned. Christina helped me feel as though I made the best decisions for my son’s birth and I don’t regret what happen even if it didn’t happen the way I imagined. I would highly recommend Christina Bakanec as a doula.
When J first discussed hiring a Doula to help support her through labour I guess I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I had heard of Doulas before, but had not really EVER thought about what a Doula might be able to do for me or my wife during her labour. Truthfully, although I had heard of Doulas before, I really had NO CLUE about what Doulas did beyond the fact that Doulas had something to do with babies. So, when J told me she wanted to hire a Doula I was pretty ambivalent about it, and I wondered why we needed one anyway—essentially, shrugged my shoulders and said something to the effect of, “Okay, if that’s what you want to do. I don’t have strong feelings about it one way or the other.” Just like that the process of hiring a Doula was begun! Now, looking back, I do not know what we would have done without Christina as our Doula. She was an amazing help and support to both J and I during J’s very long and difficult labour. Christina seemed to understand what J and I wanted and needed. I really appreciated how Christina was frequently in contact with her mentors and was able to make suggestions that were helpful, including additional questions we could ask the OB to get a better idea of how labour was progressing. J has already mentioned that Christina was a “back-up” Doula who was able to help us when our original Doula was called away very suddenly and very unexpectedly. Christina was very good at establishing a rapport with us very quickly. I would recommend her services very highly and without reservation.
After the long and difficult birth of my first child I knew I wanted something different the second time around and decided to hire a doula. I found Christina through the Prairie Birth Network and I could not be more pleased with the result. With her knowledge, help and support during my pregnancy I built the best birth team available and felt comfortable and secure in all my choices. During the birth she was amazing, a warm and supportive presence for both my husband and I. With her help my son was born after 7 hours of natural labour, the kind of labour I had dreamt about and worked for. Christina worked very well with my OB and the nursing staff, who commented on how professional and respectful she was. I am certain my birth experience would not have been the same without Christina and I do not hesitate to recommend her as an excellent and highly compassionate doula.
Such wonderful, kind, knowledgeable, intuitive ladies! Really helped me emotionally, and physically, and provided very helpful information all along the way. Willing to bend over backwards to find the right information for you! I loved having the extra support! also great breastfeeding help :) even though this was my fourth nursing baby, I faced challenges I hadn’t expected and was helped through it. I would have great confidence in recommending them to anyone!
I can’t imagine our birth without Sarah. From the first moment I talked to her she really instilled in me a sense of courage and determination - about so many issues - from my birth to choices about utlrasounds to babywearing. During the birth, Sarah was awesome. She was present without being obtrusive, she massaged my lower back for what felt like hours and her voice was quiet and peaceful. She had this way that she looked at me that told me that everything was okay and she told me I was doing great when I really needed to hear it. I think everyone should have a doula, especially for your first birth. It was such an empowering experience.”
My husband and I hired Sarah McCloskey to be our doula for our baby’s birth in May 2017. When we first met Sarah we knew right away that she was the doula for us. She was very kind and confident. We knew that every bit of knowledge she shared us was well researched and evidence based. She would even send us articles to read when we needed help making decisions. She was very accessible and helped answer any questions I had during the prenatal period. When it came to delivery day(s) Sarah was indispensable. She was there to help during my multi-day labour, had great ideas to help me progress, and was extremely supportive and encouraging when I needed it the most. I have to say that I am most grateful for the help Sarah provided my husband. They made a great team and it would not have been the same without her. Sarah’s sister also joined us for extra support which allowed me to continue with my birth plan into the long hours. I am a healthier and happier momma because of the Something Beautiful Birth Support team. When looking for a doula, I would suggest interviewing a few doulas, and to make sure Sarah is one of those people, you won’t regret it. Thank you Sarah for all that you have done for us.
We are so thankful we hired Sarah for our birth. She helped and supported us in ways we didn’t even know we needed. She was so attentive throughout our VERY long labor and the support and care she provided after our babies birth went far beyond our expectations. The value we received far exceeded what we paid for this service.
