Our Role as Doulas
Doulas provide personalized, empathic, unbiased support for your individual pregnancy and birth. We fully support whatever kind of birth you choose, whether that be hospital or home, cesarean or vaginal, medicated or unmedicated. We work completely for you, the client; it is our role to fully support you through your birth process. This support usually includes information and resources as requested by the client, emotional support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and physical comfort measures during labour and birth. We assist clients with navigating the many decision making processes that occur during birth. We also provide breastfeeding support postpartum, if desired.
It is just as important to understand what doulas do NOT do as it is to understand what doulas do.
As your doula, we will not:
- Perform clinical tasks such as blood pressure readings, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, urine tests or measurements. We will not even take your temperature as our role is strictly non-medical.
- We will not make medical decisions for you. We will help you find the information you need to make your own informed decisions. We will also remind you if there is a deviation from your birth plan.
- We will not speak to medical staff regarding matters where health care decisions are being made. We can discuss your concerns with you, suggest options and help you navigate the decision making process.
